It happens to everyone: a spectacular moon hangs over the water, you raise your camera or phone, and the result is a tiny white blob indistinguishable from a parking-lot lamp. Lunar photography fails for two specific, fixable reasons — exposure and scale. Solve both and the moon becomes one of the most satisfying subjects in the sky.
Reason one: the moon is daylight. It is a sunlit rock; your camera, seeing the surrounding night, exposes for darkness and nukes the moon to pure white. Go full manual: ISO 100, f/8, shutter around 1/125th — the classic “looney 11” ballpark — then adjust to taste. Suddenly craters, maria, and texture appear. On phones, tap the moon and drag exposure down hard, or use pro mode with the same settings.
Reason two: focal length is scale. The moon occupies only half a degree of sky; a wide lens renders it a speck. Meaningful lunar detail starts around 300mm and gets dramatic at 600mm. No supertelephoto? Change the game: shoot the moon as an element, not a portrait — rising huge-looking behind palms, piers, or rooftops. The famous giant-moon shots are telephoto compressions of distant foregrounds; find a subject a half-mile away, back up, zoom in, and align.
Timing multiplies drama: full-moon rise at dusk is the money window — the moon glows orange through low atmosphere while the landscape still holds blue light, letting one exposure hold both. Moonrise apps give the azimuth so you can pre-plan alignments; the moon moves faster than expected, so compositions last about ninety seconds.
Stability and honesty: tripod or braced elbows at those focal lengths, two-second timer, and skip the digital zoom — crop later instead. And if the result still underwhelms: composite moon replacements are everywhere online, but the real photograph, craters earned, is the one worth printing.
